What are CNG Cascades ?

High-Pressure Storage, Transportation & Dispensing Solutions

CNG Cylinder Cascades, also known as Quad or Bank System are used for storage, transportation and dispensing of CNG in industrial and commercial applications. These CNG cascades consist of multiple high pressure CNG cylinders mounted on iron structure and interconnected through high-pressure piping and valves.

All CNG Storage Cascades are manufactured in accordance with PESO guidelines and applicable standards. The cascade capacity typically ranges between 750 to 4500 WLC and can be designed for either stationary or mobile use.

Cascade Configuration & Safety Features

Stationary cascades consist of 3 banks :

  1. Low (50% of total cylinders)
  2. Medium (30% of total cylinders)
  3. High (20% of total cylinders)

Mobile cascade usually consists of one bank.

All the cylinders in the cascades are equipped with shut-off valves, safety valves, pressure relief devices, pressure gauges and isolation valves for safe operation.

Types

Designed Based on Cylinder Type, Capacity and Application Requirements

CNG cascades are designed and classified based on the types of CNG Cylinders used, which determines the system’s weight, capacity and application. Choosing the correct cascade type is important for safety, mobility, storage capacity and operational efficiency.

Type 1 Cascades

All-Metal Cylinders

Type 1 CNG cascades use fully steel cylinders without any composite wrapping. These are the most basic and traditional type of CNG cylinders. They are strong, durable and designed for 200–250 bar working pressure as per ISO and PESO standards. However, they are heavier compared to Type 2, 3 and 4 cylinders. These are commonly used in stationary CNG stations where weight is not a major concern and cost-effectiveness is important.

Type 2 Cascades

Hoop Wrapped Composite Cylinders

Type 2 CNG cascades use steel cylinders that are wrapped with composite material (usually glass fiber) around the middle portion. The ends of the cylinder remain steel. This makes them stronger and slightly lighter than normal all-steel cylinders. Type 2 cascades are a good option when you want a balance between safety, strength and cost. They are commonly used in CNG stations and mobile gas transport vehicles.

Type 3 Cascades

Fully Wrapped Composite Cylinders with Metal Liners

Type 3 CNG cascades use cylinders with an aluminum inner liner fully wrapped with composite material (carbon or glass fiber). This makes them much lighter than Type 1 and Type 2 cylinders. Because of their lighter weight, they are ideal for mobile CNG transport where vehicle load matters. They also offer good resistance to corrosion and repeated filling cycles.

Type 4 Cascades

Fully Wrapped Composite Cylinders with Non-Metallic Liner

Type 4 CNG cascades use cylinders with a plastic (polymer) inner liner fully wrapped with carbon fiber. These are the lightest type of CNG cylinders available. They are best for advanced mobile CNG systems where maximum weight saving is important. Type 4 cascades offer excellent corrosion resistance, long service life, and high safety when manufactured and tested as per approved standards.
